Graduated as 2nd Lieutenant from West Point in 1890 ; stationed at the Presidio in 5th U.S. Artillery. In 1894 graduated U.S. Artillery School, sent to Fort Collins, Colo. (1896). Promoted to 1st Lieutenant and sent to Fort McHenry (1898). Shipped out to the Philippines (1899) in charge of Army Transport Service, Manila. Appointed Captain (1900) and rose to Colonel.
